Elmvale Independent opens its doors

The highly-anticipated reopening of the neighbourhood grocery store at the Elmvale Mall has finally happened. The EACA reached out to new owner
Laura Dubois with some of the questions that have been on the minds of Elmvale residents.

Welcome to Elmvale! How have the first few weeks been since you opened on April 22nd?
The entire team is so excited to be a part of revitalizing the Store for better variety and layout. Our team is dedicated to strong customer care, identifying community needs, and fresh offerings. We have received terrific feedback so far about the Store. It has been a great opening.
How do you envision Laura's Independent Grocer as a member of the community?
Being a part of the community is integral to running a neighbourhood Store. The vision includes participating with food insecurity in every possible way, being active with the schools (and school councils) to increase the benefits of the breakfast program, and partnering with sports teams and recreational fundraising (where possible), as well as collaborating with CHEO and the Ronald McDonald house. Participation with PC children's charity will bring funds to those children with needs near the Store.

What changes can customers expect to see in the new grocery store? What will remain the same?
We have increased our multicultural food offering in every area of the Store, even adding an entire aisle of new dry grocery products. We are also trying out new products in our fresh departments with many HALAL offerings. Stop by to see us today. Our organic section and gluten free items have increased and we still have a great selection of traditional grocery items and even some non-food items. We might just have the bbq you need! Our garden centre is open and overflowing with beautiful blooms.
What is your philosophy/approach to operating a community grocery store?
As a team we need to make the shopping experience joyful. You can expect to find the item you need and to be treated with care. There shouldn't be lineups and you should anticipate a hands on owner available to answer any questions you might have. If we can help we should.... and it is up to us to find creative ways to make a difference in the community by supporting fundraising needs, hiring locally, and offering a safe welcoming environment to comfortably shop.

What is the best way for customers to connect with you?
Customers will be best able to connect with our team in-store. We are interested in learning from our community as it relates to items they wish we had, and we are always available to listen to ideas, suggestions, and all feedback. Together this management team is committed to making a meaningful difference to the lives of those using our service. This means being accessible, diverse, kind, compassionate and accountable. Please come to say hello. We can't wait to see you!

Elmvale Acres: Latest News

Highrise development proposal - Othello Ave.

Osgoode Properties has proposed two highrise apartment buildings (18 & 27 storeys) to be built behind the existing 9-storey buildings at 2025 Othello Ave.
Despite the need for housing in Ottawa, these two buildings pose many concerns for residents of Elmvale Acres, including building heights, site density and increased vehicle traffic. To download the proposal, click the link below.

Have a concern? Speak up!

Elmvale Acres residents are strong advocates for sustainable development that respects the integrity of our community. The EACA believes the Osgoode Properties proposal FAILS on both of these points. For the record, Alta Vista Ward Councillor Jean Cloutier is also against the terms of this proposal.

That said, MANY VOICES are needed to turn something like this around. If you are concerned about what you see, take a few moments to craft an email to let the City know how you feel. Below are the emails addresses of
people you can -- and should -- reach out to:
Councillor Jean Cloutier
City of Ottawa Planner Tracey Scaramozzino
